Digital publishing for desktops, tablets and the iPad

The next five years will see the transformation of the print based publication industry to digital, whether it is digital magazines,
digital company annual report and accounts, digital corporate brochures or digital catalogues, the developments now
coming make this inevitable. The players involved are the biggest in the field and they have all things print well
and truly in their sights. Resistance is futile. he good news is that the tools needed to make the change
to digital are available here and now. All that is needed is the political will to make it happen.

Anything that can be printed can now be published to tablets such as the iPad, with the addition of videos, audio and
interactivity, all directly linked to your website for in-app online ordering and purchasing. So for instance a series
of holiday brochures would contain picture galleries of the hotels, videos of the resort and the activities
available, all the latest special offers and online booking all in the same place, all within the app.
Digital orporate reports now come with investor information via video interviews, audio talks,
interactive animated financial graphics. Quarterly updates, sustainability reports, product
information, sales and technical brochures, basically all of your corporate digital
literature downloadable and readable directly within the app.

In Search of Monet - Fine Art Photography comes to the iPad

Fine art photography comes to the iPad in the form of stunning landscapes from the West Coast of Scotland to the Sahara
Desert. Monet inspired poppy fields full of beauty and colour, cherry orchards in full bloom. An idyllic childhood
in fantasy gardens compete with the waterfalls of Wales and the fish market of Venice for atmosphere,
texture and mystery. The digital book also traces the influence of Monet on the photographer's work
specifically, and modern visual expression in general

The In Search of Monet iPad app is a fully interactive digital coffee table style fine art photography book, featuring 36 full
page photographs in full colour with accompanying text, voice-over's by Georgia Allen, picture galleries, video
and much more. In Search of Monet is one of a new generation of fine art photography e books for tablets.
All the photography at In Search of Monet has been created using traditional photographic film.
Not because we think film is better than digital, but because film allows for additional
levels of experimentation and expression, plus a whole range of different processes
can be employed to create the particular look and feel I am after,
long before reaching the digital domain.

In Search of Monet

Monday morning 8 a.m. - in the middle of another long, hot, sweltering summer in London Having decided not to become
an investment banker - what to do - if not a self styled master of the universe - then what - I was at a loss -
a crossroads Then someone went out and bought a book. It was never the intention to follow anyone,
quite the opposite, but once you turn off the commercial road and start following your own
path assuming you were also moving out of the city as Monet did, it isn’t very long
before you start finding the same scenes of poppy fields, orchards, rivers
and landscapes to explore and capture.

The light and texture are the same as ever, the weather conditions remain constant, despite the changing climate,
only the medium has changed, the challenge of recording and working in a similar scene simply emphasises
the growing feeling of following in someone’s very large and very impressive footsteps.

Individual i - A new digital magazine for the iPad

Individual i is fully interactive with multiple scrolling pages, full screen video, picture galleries, web links, and audio.
The primary view for this magazine is landscape, additional complementary content is available when you turn
your tablet to view portrait. Features include a look and a reaction to the Lexus LFA super car including
videos and audio, originally this feature was to be quite different, but something happened during the
process which is difficult to explain, you need to download the magazine to understand fully.

The Iconic Image takes as a reference point James Dean and Marlon Brando with photography by up and coming
photographer Bathsheba, hair by Frayja. With “Modern Life” we take a cutting look at two view points of
the modern workplace and the type of people that thrive in it, or not. We like to think we are being
witty and thought provoking, daring in a world where speaking you mind is a sackable offence,
but it probably just sounds bitter. But as Eminem said “I will fight for my right to say
something you might not like”

Climate Control - The Iconic Image - Modern Life

You can take the boy out of the car, but you can’t take the car out of the boy, it’s in the blood, like oil, drip, drip, drip.
It’s not the smell of oil or petrol or rubber or any smell at all. It’s partly what it looks like, what it sounds like, what it feels
like, but these are just indicators to the possibilities of what is a promise, a promise of something you cannot get any
other way, a promise of speed. We know that it is wrong, we have everyone telling us that it is wrong, four years
after giving up driving, four years of basking in the glow of moral superiority that comes with only using public
transport and along comes a machine that can take you where you want, no need to go, and bring you back
not a place as in Bognor or Watford or London but a space, a space you enter just past the 130mph mark
when everything changes and the world goes into slow-mo, and you can let go and really drive.

And keep on driving fast, really fast, really much too fast. It’s not about status or materialism it’s about a means
to an end, you don’t want to look at it, except to admire the lines, not for their own sake but because that
is the way they need to be if this piece of engineering is going to deliver on its promise.
The promise to feel so completely alive, the need to be so totally wide awake.

Animated Online Digital Magazines

Many people have been predicting the demise of the humble book or magazine for quite some time now, I am not one of those.
The book is the single most effective way of conveying large amounts of information in a compact form and isn’t going away
any time soon. What is happening is the increase in the number of formats that books, magazines, brochures and
catalogues are created in. To complement the old paper format, we now have digital. The digital publication,
in addition to text and pictures can also deliver video, animation, interactively, and sound, creating
a new generation of literature for the environmentally aware reader of the 21st century.

Frayja takes up the story

The look I was going for with this set of pictures could best be described as " Iconic " The direction we chose to follow
was the lost art of the Iconic image. Super models and superstars have become diminished through overexposure
and have therefore  become ubiquitous, and the Iconic image has been replaced by blandest of brands.
Taking inspiration from James Dean, Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe and Kurt Cobain who's faces are better known
today than ever, their iconic images has and will continue to out last any bland branding.

Bathsheba is one of a number of up and coming photographers for whom the starting point is so much more
advanced than their predecessors. She takes as her point of reference the work of both Nick Knight and
David Bailey. In a world that shouts image from every rooftop Bathsheba is not intimidated by
the wealth of imagery coming at us from all sides, she positively enjoys it. People now get
what you are doing, she says, they understand the references of the genre, they see where
you are coming from, allowing you to freely roam around inside the subject without
fear of not being understood visually.

Research demonstrates publishing professionals are looking to understand the challenges of digital publishing
and the shift to tablets and e-readers. They want to know: What are the major new revenue streams
for the publishing industry? Will apps offer a way for publishers to monetize digital content?

Which tablets offer the strongest commercial opportunity? All the statistics demonstrate that interactivity
in the form of video, animations and user participation increase the readership engagement exponentially,
with time spent on both the individual pages and the digital publication as a whole increasing
significantly. For high impact, high visibility publications the sky is the limit,
it just depends on budgets, time constraints and imagination.

All the examples shown can and will contain advertising, the longer your auidence spends on your publication
the higher the rating achived in the eyes of advertisers. To date advertising has been the main way of
generating revenue for digital publications, as with print, the readership profile and numbers are
what count, the more clicks you can produce, the more advertisers are willing to pay.

An additional factor with digital can be location, if a advertiser is looking to reach a particular market
which is either to difficult or to expensive to reach with print based publications such as South East
Asia or USA, and you can deliver readers from those locations, then you could be in business.
